VANESSA JUSTICE DANCE was formed in 2007 in Brooklyn, NY. The project-by-project company constructs aesthetically layered, variegated dances that stem from rigorous investigations into form, content, and process. Rooted in questioning and experimentation, each creative process involves movement and choreographic research that feeds the content and performance of the work. This process is indelibly shaped by the presence of the performers, currently Maggie Bennett, Kendra Portier, and Alli Ruszkowski.
Ms. Justice's personal approach to composition relates to open systems theory and the playful mood of postmodern art. Her work grapples with existence and point of view. Her interest in the human body has evolved to be a primary inspiration in her process; she explores its functional, contextual, and relational realities, and deeply embedded systems of meaning. Her dances contain original movement, with specific attention given to tone, qualitative nuance, state-of-being, and space/place/environment.
Ms. Justice often superimposes intentions and processes, cultivating unexpected relationships among disparate elements, and often draws on sources outside the field of dance. Each dance becomes embedded in its own research and situational matrix. Since 2003, she has aimed for an aesthetic of deliberate ambiguity. She seeks an engaging, provocative ambiguity that brings moments of wonderment and resists quick classification. Ms. Justice believes that dance as an art form positions the audience as active perceivers/feelers/interpreters of their lived experience.
